SEN. CAROL LIU TO HOST CENSUS TOWN HALL MEETING IN THE CHINESE COMMUNITY
LOS ANGELES – Sen. Carol Liu will host a Town Hall Meeting to address the importance of a complete U.S. Census count in Temple City on Saturday (March 13, 2010).WHAT: Asian Pacific Islander Leaders Push for Participation in 2010 CENSUS
“The demographics of the San Gabriel Valley have changed dramatically in the past ten years. In particular, there has been a tremendous influx of Chinese and Taiwanese immigrants in the area. It is our responsibility to communicate information about the Census, and assure everyone that all information is confidential,” said Liu, D-La Cañada Flintridge.
Census data helps determine California’s share of federal funding and decide the number of seats the state has in the U.S. House of Representatives. Los Angeles County estimates that more than 170,000 residents went uncounted during the 2000 Census, resulting in the loss of an estimated $636 million in federal funding.
Community partners include: Temple City Chamber of Commerce, Chinatown Service Center, Asian Pacific Policy and Planning Council (A3PCON), Center for Asian Americans United for Self Empowerment (CAUSE), Orange County Asian Pacific Islanders Community Alliance (OCAPICA), and the Census Bureau.
Liu represents nearly 850,000 people in the 21st Senate District, which includes Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena, La Cañada-Flintridge, San Gabriel, Temple City, and several City and County of Los Angeles communities.
